Many men season their conversations with profanity. They try to justify it as “not that bad” and being “normal.” The words you consistently choose reveal the beliefs, thoughts, and true feelings of your heart.
Moreover, if you pepper your public conversations with profanity, what is more than likely to happen in the privacy of your home or at work? Most likely, your anger becomes an unbridled barrage of wounding words. Wounds inflicted by the careless wielding of hurtful words can take years to heal. For some, it can take a lifetime!
Unkind words, even the small but persistent ones, are much like a paper cut. Although seemingly insignificant, paper cuts may become infected and cause great pain if not treated. If you were to accumulate one or two paper cuts each week, every week, the pain would become unbearable by month’s end!
Remember too, that careless and hurtful words are at the heart of the growing “bullying” problem in our schools and communities.
When you think about it, choosing not to use profanity may cause you to become more thoughtful and profound in your choice of words.
Choosing to be profound instead of profane enables you to remain a source of strength and safety to your friends and loved ones. As a result, your words affirm others and encourages intimacy. This deepens your relationships and enables you to become much more relevant and real.
During my freshman year of college in a heated exchange, I let my tongue get the best of me. It wasn’t a pretty site nor sound I might add. Upon hearing the volley of poorly chosen profanity, Lt. Colonel Nelson, my professor who would also become my mentor, challenged me candidly, “Mr. Turner, you do realize that ‘Profanity is a weak mind trying to express itself more forcefully.’” His words, spoken in kindness and truth, still resonate in my heart today!
Your words provide an opportunity to create intimacy, heal wounds, and bring out the full potential in your loved ones, friends, and colleagues. Will they remember you for being profane or profound?
